Why Didn’t I Feel Anything During My First Session?

Most people feel nothing dramatic the first time. That is the normal experience, and it tells you very little about whether the session did its work.

Hypnosis works at the cognitive and subconscious level. The part that counts happens quietly, underneath the level where you would register it as a feeling. A session can land properly and still feel like 20 minutes of sitting with your eyes closed, listening to a voice.

If you were waiting for something theatrical, that expectation comes from stage shows. You stay aware the whole way through, you can open your eyes at any point, and you can stop the audio whenever you want. More on that in will I lose control during hypnosis.

What the changes usually look like

The shifts are real, and they are quiet:

  • Shifts in perspective. Something that felt heavy last week takes up less room in your head.
  • Reduced internal friction. The thing you used to argue yourself into doing, you just do.
  • New responses to familiar situations. Same trigger, different reaction.

That last one catches most people out. You rarely feel the change arriving. You notice it afterwards, in a moment where you would have expected yourself to react the old way.

Staying alert is fine

A lot of people decide the session failed because they heard every word and never lost track of the room. Hearing everything is common, and it works. A light, relaxed state is enough to do the job, which is covered in how deep you need to go for hypnosis to work.

It has more in common with focused attention than with being switched off, which is why the comparison with meditation comes up so often.

Give it repetition before you decide

One session is a small sample. Repetition is what builds the response, the same way it does with the subliminals, where the first signs usually show up after 2 to 4 weeks.

So put the session on a regular schedule and judge it after a few weeks. Here is how often to listen. If nothing is moving after a fair run at it, write to me and tell me what you have been doing, and I will help you work out where it is getting stuck.

Still stuck?

If this did not answer it, the rest of the Help Center might, and we answer every email personally.
